During World War Two, nickel was desperately needed for the war effort. In order to help fulfill that need, nickel that was to be used in the minting of coins was diverted to the war effort. In part of 1942 and all of 1943, 1944, and 1945, nickels were struck in an alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9%
